Hmm she is starting to drop now isn't she!

My girl hasn't changed in days, but bubs is rockin around like crazy in there now and making her very uncomfortable.

I'm just waiting for her belly to go into the V shape and her sides to go flatter, so we are waiting for the same thing now...

haha at least your girl can lay down, poor Ginge hasn't laid down for about 4mths now because she has trouble getting back up. I will know for sure if she lays down then it is time for action!

What about the colour inside her vulva? It will go loose to part and darker pink to crimson coloured when she is really close, and her belly will go really pointed in the middle and flat on the sides once the foal is turned around into the birthing position. (Sorry if you already know all of this hehe).

Here's some of today's photos of Ginge.

And I don't know what the hell this was all about, but it went on for a few minutes and both walked away looking very sore and sorry for themselves, all I could do was watch while my heart was in my mouth praying the belly didn't cop a kick. This happened about 30sec after the one of them peacefully grazing, they turned really nasty at each other, very out of character for both of them, especially Ginge who can barely waddle around at the moment but wouldn't let up until Sassy ran off.

Can't believe Ginge hasn't gone yet PK, she is huge!!!!!! Cool action shots and could imagine how scary it would have been to watch. Her boobies look ready and maybe the scuffle in the paddock means it is going to happen really soon and she wants to be left alone...

You often find the belly appears smaller close to foalng time because the foal is sitting up between the hips more and this is why the buldges on the side disappear. Ginge hasn't got there yet, so I think you'll beat me still!

Typically any change in behaviour is a signal that something is gonna happen, but unfortunately mares don't read the rule book!
They say the mare can prepare for foaling over 3-4 weeks, or over 3-4 hours, so if in doubt DON'T TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THEM!

I have had mares start acting strangely a couple of months out from due date, these are the ones to really watch closely in case they decide to slip it out early.
I've also had mares that show absolutely no signs. Look at Ginge, she didn't go flat sided or really V shaped like most of my others have, she didn't wax up, and she didn't go dark red in the vulva membranes, but she still foaled!

If you can get your hands on one, there's a good book called Blessed Are The Broodmares.

I have also had mares that LOOK in foal, even act as though they are getting close to partuition, but are empty!!
One mare had been running with a stallion for a few years before I bought her, and when I got her home she just kept getting fatter and fatter and I was certain she was in foal, put her in the foaling yard and she used to get up to all sorts of weird things at night, like sitting up like a dog and bagging up and stuff, but then I had owned her for 12mths, even more, and still nothing came of it. Vet said it must have been a phantom pregnancy, or perhaps she had been pregnant but lost it early on and the pregnancy hormones stayed there.

So this is the mare in question...

Today her udders have changed...

I am trying to work out when she could be due, we have had her since May...
for the last six weeks she has been showing signs of being in foal and I have been
writing it off as wishful thinking.. Scratch head

Hmm doesn't look in foal to me just judging by those pics. I assume she would have been served before you bought her if she was, which would make her due no later than March and to me she doesn't look like a 7mth pregnant mare. Sometimes a change in feed or some lush grass will make their udders spring a little bit, even on empty mares.

If you want to know if she is in foal get a wee foal tester.

Hey,
Not sure if she is in foal...She doesnt look it but then it could be a really tiny thing... I hope for your sake she is.
In regards to the not cycling and not interested in stallion she may just well be in foal or she could have something wrong with her??
I have a mare here whom has not cycled since may this year,I put the boy in with her and he was chasing her round saying "come here baby I want you bad" and she would kick him and run away from him.
Not sure if she is doing it cause she is in foal or if she has something wrong with her.

Either way I need to go get a wee foal tester (have been saying it for the past month LOL I will get, just bills keep bloody popping up and then left with no $) any who thats all I can think of in foal or a hormonal imbalance maybe??
But you wont know till you do a wee foal test, and if she is negative you can get the vet to come out and give her a shot of oxytocin and that should bring her into season for your stallion to serve her, that is what I will be doing if and when I find out if my mare is pregnant or not

Some mares also have silent heats, they are the hardest to get in foal!

And some mares also won't show to certain stallions, but then they will be all over stallions like a rash. It's weird like that. Often the mare I want to breed to a certain stallion will not show for him, but will keep tarting to one of the others! Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad
