ok..question...I clipped all three horses two went a gross funny color like I expected but a spray with conditioner and baby oil brought it straight back but the third one....

He never changed colour at all and is still as black as he was with the long coat..why is this?

Black buckskin??? It's like when you clip a taffy, they have a beautiful coat and then you clip and they are a beautiful silver dapple underneath! Where clipping my bay makes him loose all his lovely colour even though he is always rugged so there isn't any sun bleaching! Sad

Yeah im pretty sure he is a black buckskin well his mum is a bay tobiano and his dad is a pally pinto and I havent had his tested I am pretty certain he is (gold around the eyes and in the sun with his summer coat you can see faint black points on his legs.

But I had no idea they stayed black when you clipped them.My bay taffy went a greyish colour! so bizzare with faint dapples...

I have a grulla palouse and she stays dark when clipped! It helps that their skin colour is darker so you don't have the skin colour interfering with whats left of the coat colour!

Thought id post these for comparison. Both these mini ponies are smokey black (black buckskin) they are half siblings Smile

Bella (at 9 months old) her dam goes the same colour clipped

Bam (5 months old) finished clipping the day before this photo!

Also have a gelding that is a smokey black aswell (overrun with smokeys here lol) sorry no clipped pics be he is a chocolate colour like Bella. All have been fed the same types of food aswell. Except the Bam the colt didnt get sunflower seeds as they were hard to get.
So cant be all Smokeys that go black (though it would have been nice lol)

Mel when I clipped Holly today she stayed black which is great... I thought she might go a mousy grey colour like some do when clipped... so fingers crossed this is a good sign she'll stay black...!!

She doesn't have any signs of going grey so I think your safe with Holly Kay!

I am becoming increasingly confident that she will stay black, but I don't want to jinx myself!
