| OK I know I have left this a bit late, but I need to teach my gelding to back up on command for a halter trail class this weekend!! It's the one thing I have always had problems with because he's just too damn bombproof and friendly, he doesn't want to back away, he just sooks to me and it makes me laugh and we get nowhere. Any tips??? | |

| I wish I could help...Humphrey has taken to "sleeping" during training season, he has become very lazy. Although I have gotten him to move his feet with just a tap with the whip on them which I am happy about. Are you allowed to use the lead to make them go back? | |

| Ok...I lied I have done some work with shatters lol, just didnt wanna make myself look like a noob if she didnt do it on the day.
Have you ever head of clicker training? You can get the clickers from Big W in the pet section..If not Im sure I have a spare one here lying round if you wanna come get it.
Basically clicker training is a positive reward system, they do what you want, you click at the exact stage they are doing it then give them a pat or treat.
What I do is I back her up by putting pressure on he nose as I am doing this I give her the visual and verbal cue and click...I think it too ten minuites and now she does it perfect.
Or if you want you I still need to teach warrior so I can make you a video if you want?

| Yeah I've heard of clicker training but I'm not sure that you can use a clicker in the class, you are only supposed to use body language, and yes Tash, you can use the lead but you can not use "pressure" on the lead, if that makes sense. Some of mine are taught to back up when the lead is wiggled, but Duke doesn't respond to it. | |

| Has anyone on here actually done halter trail before?? It's been years since I did it and I never mastered the backing up last time either.
I've discovered that if I bring my hand with the lead back towards his wither, he backs up because he wants me to be in front of him, but I am not sure if that would be considered as using too much pressure?

| I train mine with a little bit of pressure on the halter (so they get the idea to go backwards) and pressing the point of their shoulder (near side) with one hand. Once they get the idea of going back you can reduce the amount of pressure on the halter and just the pressure on the shoulder. You will occassionaly have to use a gentle nudge with the halter just to remind them that you want them to back up.
Once they have got the idea of just the pressure on the shoulder it gets to the stage where you will be to just point at the shoulder without touching them and they will back up. I also say backup when teaching them so they know thats what I want. In the end I just point at the shoulder and say back up and thats what they do. I train all my horses this way even my big stock horse weanlings and I can generally have them doing it in one training session (5-10 minutes)
