Well... My filly lunges perfectly... Anti clockwise, she walks, trots, canters, halts all on command which im proud of but try and get her to go clockwise and she just keeps turning into me,trying to get back to lunge anti clockwise and just keeps spinning on her haunches in a circle.

I have tried just getting her to circle me in a tight circle while tapping the whip behind her to get her to go foreward,I have tried sending her out with my body language but once she gets out she just spins back to the way she is comfortable with.
I think its a thing of her not knowing what to do so she trys to do what she does know, its not a naughty thing I think its just her wanting to please me type thing.
I dont have a round yard and I am out of idea...Anyone have any ideas to throw round?

Ok I know the theory but can not put it into practice as I get way too dizzy! lol This is why my very kind husband has become the expert at lunging.

Your horse despite how nice you think she is acting is not doing as she is told and she is in control. You need to keep her walking in a tight, and I mean tight, circle in the direction you want. If she goes the other way stop and start again. You have to keep her in tight until she respects your command. This may not happen straight away but don't give up. We have a filly, and she had a preferred way to lunge as well and it took a week to her going the other way without trouble. Once she is going the way let her out a little at a time, if she spins the other way, pull her back in tight.

Just remember to be firm and make sure she knows that you are in control not her.

I posted yesterday but it must of eaten the post.

Well yesterday I done the hole walking in a tight circle thing which made me dizzy as hell and nearly fell over, lol!

I had her lunging about 2 feet away from me so not ahuge length

then today I asked her to lunge and got her about 4 feet away then all of a sudden she went straight to the end of the lunge lead and stayed there and done everything I asked her.
I brought her back in lunger her the way she likes brought her in again and asked her to go the other way and she done it straight away..so she is fixed.
So your advice worked really well
yay! thank you Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy What a Face

now to teach the two boys

I done it to one of the colts before,my god what a little snot,he would keep turning towards me rearing and lunging at me cause he didnt wanna do it,so I admit I needed the whip he got a swift smak everytime he done it to me.
I almost didnt get out of the way one time and nearly got cleaned up,but in the end I had him lunging ok,I still need to yell and click and move him on or he just stops...So much for my quiet colt! lol. Serious candiate for gelding after that episode,I would of expected it off warrior but not off cappa.
they are only little but when they are lunging at you it can be quiet scary.

As for the other colt i havent gotten that far today and doubt I will.... as soon as the Oh comes home my day seems to stop even thou it's still daylight..he has a sook and says I have had all day...Not when i have to look after the baby all day i don't but...thats another story

Well so far 3 horses I have used this method on...And 3 horses now lunge.

Cappa got over his tanty and lunges probably the second best now (Shatters wins hooves down) but He was just trotting and cantering and very calm today,he even changed direction out on the very end on the lunge lead..I was amazed...He has his good moments.

Just reading over some old topics and saw that Natasha gets dizzy when she lunges . Easy fixed. Don't turn in a circle yourself just pass the lead around your body. You can even sit on a chair and lunge if you like. Razz

Helicopter, that is only possible once you have a horse that wants to lunge. Wink
